You can check that someone claiming to be a water meter inspector actually works for the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). All water meter inspectors must obey the following rules:

  • Unannounced inspections may only occur between 9 AM and 5 PM
  • Inspectors should never accept cash
  • Inspectors must be in uniform
  • Inspectors must have DEP identification

DEP inspectors don't need to enter a building or a house to measure water pressure, because they can read it from meters outside.
