Note: Consumer Affairs is extending certain license expiration dates and renewal application deadlines for licenses that expire February through June 2020.

You must have a Special Sale License to hold a sale in connection with a stated purpose.

Special sales include:

  • Going Out of Business (Class A)
  • Liquidation (Class B)
  • Alteration, Remodeling, Renovation (Class C)
  • Loss of Lease (Class D)
  • Branch Store Discontinuance or Closing (Class E)
  • Fire, Smoke, or Water Damage (Class F)
  • Creditors Committee Sale (Class G)
  • Reorganization Sale (Class H)

You can advertise the closing of a store 30 days prior to closing. The sale must take place at the location that is being closed.

Fee

The license fee is $50 for 30 days.

Expiration Date

A Special Sale License is valid for 30 days. You can renew the Going out of Business Special Sale License for two consecutive 30-day periods. You can renew all other Special Sale Licenses for only one 30-day period.

To apply online, you need a Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA) account.

In Person

If you’re applying in person, you will have to complete an application and bring it to the Department of Consumer Affairs Licensing Center or the NYC Small Business Support Center.

Online

To renew online you need to have a DCA online account and a Personal Identification Number (PIN). The PIN is required to link information about your DCA records to your online account.

If you don’t have a PIN already, you can request it by phone.

In Person

You can drop off your completed application and any required documents at the Department of Consumer Affairs Licensing Center or the NYC Small Business Support Center.
