Online Services

You can do most DMV transactions online. If the service you seek is offered online, you MUST complete it online.

In-Person Services

You MUST make a reservation for in-person transactions at a DMV office.

In-person services are limited to:

  • Applying for a conditional or restricted license
  • Changing your name on photo document
  • Commercial driver license changes or updates
  • Commercial driver license permit tests or endorsement test
  • Exchange your out-of-state license
  • Getting a NY Non-Driver ID
  • Renew your Commercial Driver License
  • Restoring a revoked or suspended license

Mail-In and Drop Box Services

DMV Offices are processing registrations and other transactions by mail. They are also accepting transactions through secure drop boxes located at each office.

Mail-in and drop box services are limited to:

  • Registering a vehicle for the first time
  • Surrendering your license plates
  • Paying sales tax

You must complete the necessary forms and gather the required documents in a single envelope. Include your email address and telephone number as requested on the application so that the DMV can contact you.

As of November 1, 2017, the New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law (VTL) requires all drivers of taxicabs and for-hire vehicles (FHVs) to wear a seat belt while driving. The new law also requires that front seat passengers above the age of 16 wear a seat belt.

If you are riding with a child, you are encouraged to bring your own car seat.  The driver must allow you to install your car seat.

The meter cannot be placed into recording position until the passengers are safely seated in the cab. Upon reaching the destination, the meter must be placed in the non-recording position.

Complaints against DMV judges must be made in writing.
