Through the Newborn Home Visiting Program (NHVP), the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene provides assistance to new mothers living in certain areas of the Bronx, Brooklyn, or Manhattan. The program also helps to identify families eligible to receive a free crib.

A health worker makes a one-time home visit to a new mother who has recently given birth. The health worker will offer help with:

  • Breastfeeding
  • Creating a safe home
  • Accessing social services

To be eligible, you must:

  • Have already given birth
  • Reside in a neighborhood serviced by NHVP
  • Be interested in education and assistance with breastfeeding
