All licenses, non-driver IDs, and registrations with an expiration date of March 1, 2020 or later have been extended until further notice.

Online Services

You can do most DMV transactions online. If the service you seek is offered online, you MUST complete it online.

In-Person Services

You MUST make a reservation for in-person transactions at a DMV office.

In-person services are limited to:

  • Applying for a conditional or restricted license
  • Changing your name on photo document
  • Commercial driver license changes or updates
  • Commercial driver license permit tests or endorsement test
  • Exchange your out-of-state license
  • Getting a NY Non-Driver ID
  • Renew your Commercial Driver License
  • Restoring a revoked or suspended license

Mail-In and Drop Box Services

DMV Offices are processing registrations and other transactions by mail. They are also accepting transactions through secure drop boxes located at each office.

Mail-in and drop box services are limited to:

  • Registering a vehicle for the first time
  • Surrendering your license plates
  • Paying sales tax

You must complete the necessary forms and gather the required documents in a single envelope. Include your email address and telephone number as requested on the application so that the DMV can contact you.

After October 1, 2021, only Enhanced or REAL ID driver licenses, permits, or non-driver IDs will be accepted to get on a domestic flight, enter certain federal buildings or military bases (unless you have a Passport). If you plan to travel, it is recommended you upgrade before 2021.

Both Enhanced and REAL IDs: 

  • Are Federal REAL ID compliant
  • Can be used for photo identification purposes
  • Can be used to board a domestic flight (within the U.S.)
  • Can be used to enter a federal building or military base
  • Show your full legal name (first, middle, last)
  • Show your residential address (where you live)
  • Require an office visit to prove your:
    • Identity - if your name has changed bring in marriage certificate(s), divorce decree(s) or court order document(s)
    • NY State residency
    • U.S. citizenship
    • Date of birth
    • Social Security status

An Enhanced license, permit, or non-driver ID:

  • Can be used to cross a U.S. border coming from Canada, Mexico, and some Caribbean countries (it is not acceptable for air travel between these countries)
  • Costs an additional $30 on top of the regular transaction fees
  • Has an American flag displayed on the document

A REAL ID license, permit, or non-driver ID:

  • Does not have additional cost, but all regular transaction fees will apply
  • Has a star displayed on the document

You need to pass a road test to obtain a driver's license. You can schedule a road test online or by phone.
