Coronavirus (COVID-19) Alert

All IDNYC Enrollment Centers are temporarily closed to prevent the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19).

Appointments to apply for, replace, correct, or change IDNYC Cards are not being taken at this time, however you may still submit your renewal application online.

The IDNYC program offers a photo identification card for all residents of New York City age 10 and older. Applicants ages 10 to 13 must apply with a caretaker. This municipal ID card connects New Yorkers to services, programs, and benefits, regardless of immigration status, homeless status, or gender identity.

The IDNYC card is currently free for all New Yorkers.

You can apply for the card in person or online. Applicants ages 10 to 13 must submit applications in person, and cannot apply online. All applicants must visit an Enrollment Center to complete the enrollment process. Appointments are required. You will need to bring documents to prove your identity and that you live in New York City.

You should receive your IDNYC card in the mail approximately 14 business days after you visit an Enrollment Center.

Cards issued to those ages 10 to 13 are valid for two years, and cards issued to those ages 14 and older are valid for five years.

When IDNYC Card Applications are accepted, you can fill out an application online or in-person at an IDNYC enrollment center. Applicants ages 10 to 13 must submit applications in person, and cannot apply online. All applicants must visit an Enrollment Center to complete the enrollment process. Appointments are currently required to apply for an IDNYC card at all Enrollment Centers. 311 can make an appointment for you and you can make appointments on behalf of others.

Enrollment Center staff will review your documentation and complete the enrollment process. Your original application and documentation will be returned to you during your visit. Your photograph will be taken. Your IDNYC card will be mailed to you in about 10 to 14 business days.

You can get an IDNYC application form at any Enrollment Center when they reopen or fill out an application online. If you complete the application online, you will still need to complete your enrollment at an Enrollment Center. Applicants ages 10 to 13 must submit applications in person, and cannot apply online.

There are IDNYC Enrollment Centers in all five boroughs, including some temporary Pop Up locations.

Appointments are required at all Enrollment Centers.

Mobile Enrollment Center (IDNYC on the Go)

The Mobile Enrollment Center is an IDNYC bus that visits locations throughout the city. It operates like any other IDNYC Pop Up center, except that appointments are not required. However, appointments are highly recommended.

When the bus is scheduled to visit a location, it will be listed in IDNYC's appointment tool. These scheduled visits will also be displayed on the IDNYC website's “Location” page, listed under the Pop Up Enrollment Centers section. A long-range schedule of the bus's appearances is not available.

The vehicle complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and is accessible.

IDNYC cannot accept requests for their mobile enrollment center to visit a specific location.

Temporary Pop Up Enrollment Centers

In addition to the permanent IDNYC Enrollment Centers in each borough, Pop Up Enrollment Centers open temporarily throughout the City.

If the location where you started your application process has closed, you should make an appointment at another Enrollment Center. 

If you applied at a temporary location and were instructed to pick up your IDNYC card because it will not include an address, the IDNYC staff members should have told you from which permanent location to pick it up. If you have questions, 311 can forward your information to IDNYC and a staff member will contact you. You should provide your IDNYC Number from the receipt given to you at the Enrollment Center.

You can submit a renewal application online.

You may renew your card up to 90 days before it expires, and up to 1 year after it expires. If your card expired more than 1 year ago, you will need to apply for a new IDNYC card at an IDNYC Enrollment Center once they reopen.

You will need your IDNYC number to renew online, which can be found on the front of your card. 

If you choose to submit a renewal application online, you may be able to update information on your card. Some changes may require you to upload and submit a scanned copy of your residency document.

Appointments are required to apply for an IDNYC card at all Enrollment Centers. You will also need to bring documents that prove your identity and whether you live in New York City. You must be at least 10 years old to get an IDNYC card. Applicants ages 10 to 13 must be accompanied by a caretaker.

If you provide your email address when scheduling, you will receive an email confirmation of your appointment.

Confirmation Number

If you provide an email address when you make your appointment, you should receive an email with your appointment date, time, and location.  It should also include a Confirmation Number. 

You will not need your Confirmation Number when you go to your appointment. However, you must make an appointment to apply for your IDNYC card.

You must have your Confirmation Number to reschedule, cancel, or look up an appointment.

If you are using a document that is in a language other than English or Spanish, IDNYC staff must arrange for a translator to be present at your appointment. 

To be sure that a translator will be available for your appointment, you can ask 311 to send that request to IDNYC. IDNYC staff will then contact you to schedule your appointment. If you do not make this request, you may need to wait for a translator or schedule another appointment.

All translation services will be provided free of charge.

Services for Non-English Speakers

There will be free interpreter services in all foreign languages available at all times at all Enrollment Centers.  

Appointments are currently required to apply for an IDNYC card at all Enrollment Centers. 311 can make an appointment for you, or you can also go online. You can make appointments on behalf of others.

Services for the Blind or Visually Impaired

IDNYC offers applications in Braille and in large print (16 point font). They are available on request at the Enrollment Centers. The website is also accessible for those using screen readers.

Services for the Deaf or Hard of Hearing

American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation is available through a video relay service at all enrollment locations.
 
If you prefer in-person sign language interpretation, you must request that at least 2 business days in advance of your appointment. If you did not request an interpreter in advance, there may be a wait of up to 2 hours for a sign language interpreter when you arrive at your appointment.

Services for the Physically Disabled

All materials at Enrollment Centers will be accessible to applicants. 

All IDNYC Enrollment Centers comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and are accessible.

If you require a home visit to apply for a new card, or to change information on your card, IDNYC staff can help to schedule a home visit appointment for you. If you provide your contact information, an IDNYC staff member will contact you to review eligibility and schedule an appointment.

If you are able to get to an Enrollment Center, all sites comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and are accessible. IDNYC staff will provide reasonable accommodations upon request.

Examples of the types of reasonable accommodations that can be provided are:

  • Sign Language interpretation
  • Help for someone who is blind
  • Scheduling at convenient times
  • Help reading and completing forms

If your IDNYC application is denied, you will receive a letter that will explain the reason your application was denied.

If you would like a secondary review of your denied application, you must call 311 within 30 days of the date on the denial letter. 

311 will forward your request to IDNYC staff who will contact you within 14 business days, to schedule an appointment for a secondary review. Please do not schedule your own appointment. Secondary Review appointments are only made by IDNYC staff.
