Become a City Marshal

City Marshals are appointed by the Mayor to enforce court orders according to fees set by State law.

Marshals do not earn a City salary or pension, and they are not peace officers.

You can get the application and learn about the qualifications and responsibilities for the position of City Marshal.

The minimum qualifications are:

United States citizen
Resident of New York City, or New York Counties, or Nassau, Westchester, Suffolk, Orange, Rockland, or Putnam Counties.
Submission of background and financial information to DOI
Satisfactory completion of approved training program
Demonstrated ability to obtain required bond, currently $100,000
Recommendation by the Mayor's Committee on City Marshals (which is attained by submitting the application)

You can get an application online or in person at the Department of Investigation (DOI).

Applications will not be made available by mail or fax. DOI cannot answer any questions regarding the application.

Application Deadline

There is no deadline for filing applications to become a City Marshal. Review of applications will be ongoing.

Applicants will receive written confirmation of their filing.
