The Federal government provides all information and assistance for Social Security. 

You can also get assistance with the New York State Supplement Program (SSP).

You can apply for Social Security, Disability, or Supplemental Security Income benefits. 

If you are already a recipient, you can:

  • Enroll in direct deposit
  • Request a replacement check
  • Report payment issues
  • Find your local office and make an appointment to discuss your benefits

Social Security Statements

As a result of budget constraints, the Federal government has stopped issuing annual Social Security Statements. You may be able to estimate your retirement benefit using the Social Security Administration's online Retirement Estimator.

You can apply for, replace, or modify your Social Security card. You also can find out how to get a different Social Security number. 

Social Security cards are free. There is no cost to apply. 

If you are requesting a new card, you must apply by mail or in person at a Social Security office. If you need a replacement card and are a U.S. citizen age 18 or older with valid state-issued identification, you can also apply online using your "my Social Security account."

Required Documents for Applying for a Social Security Card

Your application for a Social Security number and card must include two personal identification documents: 

  • Your birth certificate or your passport

Plus one of these unexpired photo IDs: 

  • U.S. driver license
  • Non-driver State ID  (or non-driver photo ID card)
  • Passport 
  • Employee ID card
  • School ID card
  • Health insurance card
  • U.S. military ID card

Your application in person or by mail must include original documents (not photocopies). Your original IDs will be returned to you.

When you apply for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) through the Social Security Administration, the Federal agency’s decision about your eligibility is sent to New York State.

You may qualify for a State-only SSI benefit known as the State Supplement Program (SSP) that is administered by New York State.

The State provides assistance if you have questions about your SSP benefit, including reporting household changes.
